2014 Polaris ATV/UTV First Looks 0
Polaris kicked-off the 2013 sales year with a bang, marking its best first quarter sales on record, followed by an equally impressive second quarter that was up 12% compared to the same period in 2012. The Minnesota-based brand will look to continue that trend through the remaining months and into 2014 with a line-up of ATVs and side-by-sides that feature a handful of new models and plenty of tried-and-true favorites.
2014 Sportsman ATVs
Polaris adds two new models to what it dubs the “value” segment of its Sportsman ATV roster. The Sportsman 570 EFI is an updated version of the Sportsman 500 H.O. and comes with a liquid-cooled Pro-Star 570cc Single with electronic fuel injection that’s claimed to churn out 44 horsepower. It boasts increased electrical oomph as well, with a new stator adding an estimated 40% gain in electrical power. The fuel tank is larger by 0.6 gallons, up to 4.5 gallons total, which Polaris projects will yield an 11% increase in range over the 500 H.O. Ergonomics have been tweaked as well, with a narrower seat and side panels said to help increase rider comfort. The front and rear steel tubular frame racks have been redesigned to make storing cargo easier. Two 570 EFI options will be available; the standard Sportsman 570 EFI is built for a single rider while the Sportsman Touring 570 EFI is set to handle two-up duty.
The second new model is the Sportsman 570 EPS, which comes with all the goodies of the EFI but with the added benefit of Electronic Power Steering. The 570 EFI will be available in Indy Red, Sage Green and Polaris Pursuit Camo color schemes while the 570 EPS will come in Sage Green, Polaris Pursuit Camo and Bright White. MSRP for the Sportsman 570 EFI is listed at $6499.
Returning models include two premium-class rides, the Sportsman XP850 H.O. and Sportsman 550, both of which feature EPS as standard. These two ATVs also receive revised rear suspension geometry based on the 2013 Scrambler sport ATV, helping to reduce scrub by a claimed 42%. Both will be available in two-up touring versions. In the value-class, offerings include the Sportsman 800 EFI, the Big Boss 6×6 800 EFI and 400 H.O. models. The sport-styled Scrambler XP 850 H.O., which was introduced in 2013, will be back in dealerships in 2014 as well.
2014 Ranger Utility Side-by-Sides
Three new models debut in the Ranger Utility side-by-side line-up for 2014; the Ranger Crew 900, the Ranger 570 EFI and the Ranger Crew 570 EFI.
The 2014 Ranger Crew 900 is a stretched version of the Ranger XP 900, and is built to seat five passengers comfortably. The additional room and expanded wheelbase necessitated a redesigned cab and more rigid chassis to maintain a smooth ride. There’s a new center console as well, with cup holders and storage space. Riders in the back seat each benefit from full shoulder harness seat-belts while an adjustable seat (which is available only on limited edition models) and standard steering-wheel tilt give the pilot customizable ergonomic options.
The Crew 900’s engine now sits underneath the rear cargo box, which Polaris says makes for a quieter ride and easy access for maintenance duties. The box itself has more tie-down points than its progenitor and is built to fit a pallet and carry up to 1000 pounds. Polaris also dropped in a high-capacity battery and new stator to boost electrical power by 30% over the Ranger Crew 800 EFI. The 900 Crew is claimed to be capable of towing a ton, and the ProStar 900 engine claims 60 horsepower, a 50% increase over the 800 EFI. The size of the Crew 900’s gas tank was increased by 11% to hold 10 gallons as well. The Crew 900 comes with electronic fuel injection standard and has an available electronic power steering option.
The mid-size 2014 Ranger segment gets upgraded with the Ranger 570 EFI and Crew 570 EFI. Updates to previous 500 versions, both the 570 EFI and Crew 570 EFI receive a claimed 25% power boost thanks to the larger, liquid-cooled Pro-Star 570 engine. The powerplant was originally built into the sport-centered RZR 570 and is said to produce 40 horsepower. Both UTVs come equipped with larger stators for increased electrical power. The 570 EFI seats two and the Crew 570 EFI will hold four passengers. Each machine comes with a new transmission to help provide smoother gear shifting. As with the 900 Crew, the engine in both the 570 EFI and 570 Crew EFI was placed at the back of the machine, behind the seat, to provide a quieter ride. Limited-edition models are available with EPS, offered as an option for the first time in the mid-size segment.
Returning models within the full-size range include the XP900 and XP900 EPS, the 800 EFI, the 6×6 900 and Ranger Diesel. Within the mid-size segment are the 800 EFI Midsize, Ranger 400 and Ranger EV. Crew models include the Crew 800 EFI and Crew Diesel in addition to the new offerings in 2014.
2014 RZR Side-by-Sides
Polaris knows when to leave well enough alone, so many of the updates in the 2014 RZR line are cosmetic, with new color options marking the big changes to the four-seat RZR 4 900 and RZR 4 800. Others receive a little more love, like the high-performance segment RZR 900 and RZR S 800, each now available with Maxxis Bighorn tires. In the trail division, the RZR 570 comes with dual-rate suspension springs to help improve ground clearance. All limited edition RZRs will come with electronic power steering in 2014 as well.
Following the formula for success demonstrated by the RZR XP 900 H.O. Jagged X Edition in 2013, Polaris plans to offer another special edition in 2014: the RZR 800 EPS XC. The 55-inch wide machine has power steering, Walker Evans shocks on all four wheels, black PRP seats, LED headlights, Vader rims and Maxxis Bighorn tires.
