Wienen Motorsports’ Chad Wienen swept the inaugural Built Ford Tough Briarcliff ATV National and extended his points lead in the 2014 Mtn. Dew ATV MX National Championship. JB Racing’s Joel Hetrick grabbed second-overall, finishing 4-3 followed by Wienen’s teammate, Thomas Brown, in third with a 3-4 result.
Wienen was in the groove early on, setting the fastest qualifying time on the new track, but off the start in Moto 1 it was Baldwin Motorsports’ Josh Upperman who gained the early advantage. The Honda rider couldn’t sustain his place at the head of the pack though, as BCS Performance’s Ronnie Higgerson throttled past before the end of the opening lap. Wienen wasn’t far behind following a start which left him back in fourth, and soon the Yamaha ace was in position to start picking-off the competition. A few laps into competition Wienen had reeled in the front runners and within the same lap had passed both Upperman and Higgerson for the lead. From there Wienen was uncatchable, stretching a gap on the field for his first win of the day.
Behind, Upperman and Higgerson swapped position and then faced a challenge from Brown, who pushed his way into third-place on Lap 6. Higgerson slipped back to fourth and got tangled in a fierce battle with Hetrick and Motosport.com’s John Natalie for fourth-place, which raged until the checkers. Upperman and Brown were able to hold for second and third in Moto 1 while Hetrick eventually gained the upper-hand and finished in fourth, followed by Higgerson and Natalie in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Natalie was clearly not satisfied with his Moto 1 showing and powered to the front off the start in Moto 2. He maintained a commanding pace at the head of the pack through the opening laps as well, but had Wienen stalking him aggressively. By the fourth rotation Wienen was ready to make his move, passing Natalie for the lead and holding there for the remainder of the contest. By this point Wienen and Natalie had separated from the rest of the field, allowing Natalie to hold second easily to the finish.
The fight for the final step was heated between Higgerson and Brown mid-way through the race, with Brown passing the Can-Am pilot on Lap 6 for third. They both faced heavy pressure from Hetrick soon after, with Higgerson losing a position to the JB Racing rider soon after dropping out of podium position. Hetrick then tracked Brown and by the final laps the two riders were battling bar-to-bar. Upperman wasn’t willing to go out without a fight either, having battled his way up the ranks throughout the race and passing Higgerson late in the game. The Honda rider caught up with Hetrick and Brown for the late moto battle, but proved unable to get past either rider by the checkers. Hetrick maintained his position in third, followed by Brown in fourth and Upperman in fifth.
Wienen is now 41 points ahead of his closest competition in the overall points tally after five rounds. Hetrick and Natalie are tied in second overall followed by Brown in fourth and Upperman in fifth.
