2010 Polaris Ranger 400 First Look 0
What good is a side-x-side if you can’t take it with you for all your work and play needs? Many of these popular UTV vehicles require a trailer in order to be moved around, but there’s a push by the manufacturers to offer safe, stable machines that will fit in the bed of a full-size pickup. Polaris comes into the midsize market with a new machine designed to be more mobile while offering the work and play attitude Rangers are becoming known for.
Utilizing a 455cc engine, Polaris claims the carbureted machine will crank out 29 horsepower which propels it up to 40 mph and can tow 1250 lbs. By using an optional SpeedKey system, the Ranger 400 can be limited to 23 mph – perfect for youngsters or if the UTV is being used by employees with heavy feet. Overall width is 56.5 inches with a 72-inch wheelbase. A MacPherson strut offers eight inches of suspension travel up front and a dual A-arm independent rear suspension setup gives nine inches out back which also holds up the 500-pound capacity on the hydraulic-tilt bed.
It does not come with the engine braking system found on the Polaris Sportsman ATVs. An automatic transmission offers high, low, neutral, reverse and park drive options along with selectable 2WD or AWD – all delivered through a shaft drive. A bench seat is designed for two people with simple controls on the dash, all wrapped in a “certified Roll-Over Protective Structure.” The operator can access the drive gear selector via a dash-mounted lever, a 2WD/AWD toggle switch, ignition key, choke, DC outlet along with some basic open storage and a cup holder. Polaris intends for this to be an affordable ride which is evident by the fixed-position steering wheel, lack of descent control, no EFI and stamped steel wheels.
Available in Solar Red, Sage Green or Mossy Oak Break-Up, the Ranger 400 retails for $7999 for standard colors with an increase for the camo. Check out the Polaris Ranger website for more information about the list of accessories.
